HELPING SCHOOLS HELP YOUR CHILD
A Guide for Parents and Caregivers

"HOW DO I BEGIN"?

"Is your child starting school for the very first time?  Does your child have a new teacher this year? Is your child starting a whole new school this year?  Or is your child going to have several teachers during the school day?

Everywhere parents, caregivers, and their children face big changes like these. Most are a little nervous as September comes hear or a change of schools is needed.  But our children also have hemophilia.  When you add hemophilia to all of this, it is down right scary.  School means that our children are away from home for more than 7 hours a day with 'strangers'.

Your child may already have been in nursery school or childcare.  Your child may have been a day camp or community center.  Your child may have been in elementary school with just one teacher for the whole year.  Each of these events meant that your child was a little more on his or her own. Most of us hope that our children will learn to be more and more 'on their own' while being happy and save.

We want our children to live their student lives as much like other children as they can.  We want them to build their abilities and not be stopped by their hemophilia....So we need teachers, school nurses, and school workers to know about hemophilia and to help our children be safe and happy while at school."
